RAIN Alliance Accepted as a Liaison to the ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee (JTC) 5 to Advance International Digital Product Passport Standardization
Acceptance will ensure RAIN technology is represented as an important data carrier in international DPP implementations.
28 October 2026 – RAIN Alliance, the non-profit industry organization supporting the development and adoption of RAIN RFID (sometimes called UHF RFID), has today announced its acceptance as a liaison to the ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee (JTC) 5 – Digital Product Passport. By joining this committee, RAIN Alliance is supporting the coordinated effort to advance international standardization and a coherent framework for the Digital Product Passport (DPP).
The DPP mandates a machine-readable data carrier containing a globally unique identifier for each product. This identifier will link to verified information about the product’s materials, environmental impact, supply chain, repairability, and end-of-life options.
RAIN RFID is already one of the approved data carriers in EN 18220:2026 “Digital Product Passport- Data Carrier Requirements”, developed by CEN/CENELEC JTC 24. This committee, to which the RAIN Alliance is also a liaison, has created a foundation of standardized identifiers, data carriers, access rights, and data exchange protocols for the DPP legal requirements of the European Union’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). Recognizing the need for such protocols to be applicable to global markets and supply chains, ISO/IEC JTC 5 is bridging the gap between European and international frameworks to create broad interoperable standards for a global DPP ecosystem.
“The Digital Product Passport is reshaping the global economy by prioritizing transparency, sustainability and efficient recycling throughout the entire lifecycle of a product,” comments Aileen Ryan, President and CEO of the RAIN Alliance. “This level of global interoperability can only be achieved through cross-industry collaboration, and so we were honored to be accepted as a Liaison to ISO/IEC JTC 5 with such significant support from voting members. Our acceptance underscores our commitment to supporting organizations in their use of RAIN tags to optimize recycling, reuse, and resale – and in turn promote a truly circular economy.”
RAIN Alliance unites over 200 global organizations to drive the universal adoption of RAIN RFID. As the collective voice of the industry, the Alliance influences policy and drives regulatory progress to advance a secure, connected future. Through contributing to the international standardization efforts of ISO/IEC JTC 5, RAIN Alliance is supporting a significant step towards establishing the DPP as fundamental infrastructure for the digitalized circular economy.
“Billions of products already rely on RAIN technology to deliver enhanced operations and support data-led decision-making across sectors including aviation, automotive, healthcare, retail, logistics and countless more,” adds Susanne Guth-Orlowski, RAIN Alliance DPP Specialist. “Each of these sectors benefit from the durable longevity RAIN tags provide as they can withstand heavy usage and harsh conditions while consistently delivering reliable data tracking throughout a product’s entire lifecycle. Furthermore, with RAIN reader capability soon to be available in smartphones, RAIN adoption will become accessible and affordable to consumers. This makes RAIN technology scalable to meet the needs of a global Digital Product Passport while bridging the gap between industry application and universal adoption.”
