The final trilogue discussions between the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of Ministers on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) are due to take place this month. In 2016 the GDPR will begin to replace the 20 year old Data Protection Directive. The GDPR will be the common data protection law across the EU. Twenty years ago there were very few RFID applications, few RF based employee badges and no contactless payment cards and no smart phones that could read tags or behave like tags. This is why the European Commission issued Mandate M436 to ensure that relevant standards were in place to assess the risks involved with RFID.
